Check your thermostat operation and programming.
Set your thermostat in the heating mode and check to see that the furnace comes on
Are the batteries in your thermostat ok?
Does the top of the chimney look like it's in proper condition?
Is the furnace operating properly?
Are there any unusual noises coming from the furnace?
Ensure that furnace exhaust venting is clear of debris
Make sure all debris and clutter is cleared away from the furnace and access
Now would be a good time to call for a Fall Furnace Tune up. As well as ensuring that your equipment is operating to peak performance we will also:
Ensure that it is running safely
Change your humidifier pad
Check and clean or change your filter as required
Remember . . .
Inspect, clean, or change air filters once a month in your central air conditioner, furnace, and/or heat pump. A dirty filter can increase energy costs and damage your equipment, leading to early failure.
If your furnace has stopped working . . .
Take these steps before you call:- Ensure your thermostat is set in the heating position, not on cooling or off.
- Increase your thermostat a few degrees to see if your heating system activates.
- Make sure your warm air registers and cold air returns are clear. Remove anything that might block them like furniture, drapes or rugs.
- Check your fuse or circuit breaker, which is in your home's main electrical panel. If you have fuses, you may need to replace one. If you have a breaker, try resetting it.
- Clean or replace your furnace filter if it's dirty. Always turn off the power switch before opening your furnace. Close the furnace access panel before switching it back on.
- Ensure that your furnace power switch (similar to a light switch and located near your furnace) is in the "on" position.
Hopefully this has you up and running again.

Once the outdoor temperature gets near the 21 degrees C:
Check that the AC breaker is turned on 24 hours prior to starting the unit
Ensure that any disconnects located outside near the unit are set to the "on" position
Check your thermostat operation and programming.
Set your thermostat in the Cooling mode and check to see that the AC system comes on. This would include the outdoor unit starting, (both the compressor and outdoor fan) and the furnace fan should engage. Is the unit delivering cooled air?
Are the batteries in your thermostat ok?
Clear away any refuse, plant growth and shrubbery.
Make sure that any covers or caps have been removed from the outdoor unit
Inspect the unit to ensure that it hasn't suffered any winter damage (ie squirrel nests, salt erosion, dirt, sludge and so forth).
